Too busy to make money?

Too busy to make money?

The other day, I met with a friend to discuss the direction and next steps in growing his already successful small company. As we spoke, he described a project/direction that would bring in potential revenue and one that he had been considering for some time. I asked him, “And why have you not done it?” He said because of the lack of time and manpower. I didn’t comment right at that moment and went on with the discussion. After a few other unexplored, revenue-generating ideas had come up and I would ask “Why haven’t you done it?” He answered the same each time. I had to stop the conversation and say, “So, what I hear you saying is, ‘We are too busy to make money.’”

I said this sarcastically, but it rang true and we took the time to look at these windows of opportunity that he kept shutting. We discussed viability, options and how they fit (or didn’t) with his vision of his company and where he wanted to go. From that discussion, we outlined areas of focus and action items that will enable his company to grow.

When was the last time that you had a discussion with an interested, experienced, objective third-party about your business? The kind of discussion where you feel comfortable to acknowledge areas of interest and potential? The kind of discussion that explores windows of opportunity for viability and prosperity? The kind of discussion that pushes you beyond your comfort zone, creates action and holds you accountable?

Without skillful and objective facilitation, can a business leader really push him/herself to think beyond his/her comfort zone?

If you have had some of these discussions, have you acted on any of the insight you gained? Did you write down the ideas for future reflection? Did you put off (or worse, discard) the “next thing” or that “window of opportunity” because you are simply ‘too busy’?

When was the last time you “named” the next thing/window of opportunity and talked it through with someone to ensure that it is in line with your mission…vision…goal for you and your company?

When was the last time you answered, “I’m too busy to make more money?”

Most business leaders will quickly deny that any such thought has ever crossed their mind, much less been expressed in any public way. However, most leaders who are working in their business feel stuck on how (or when) to grow and improve. They show they are too busy to make more money simply because they are just that, stuck…stuck working IN the business instead of ON the business.

You’ll stay stuck if you don’t take the time to take an in-depth look at where your company is currently, what windows of opportunities are open and where you want to go. If you don’t take the time to have those exploration and action-oriented conversations, aren’t you just saying, “I’m too busy to make more money?”
